2.5-Term Pathway - Foundation Certificate in Humanities - Continue to Integrated Masters - Master of Laws (MLaw) (Honours) - Law

Integrated Masters

Program Summary

Program Description

For students who've finished high school but don’t meet the entry requirements for university, a Foundation Certificate can help them gain entry to an undergraduate degree. After completing this pathway option students qualify for progression to the 1st year of an undergraduate degree at the  University of Essex.

A student’s course length is determined mainly by their English language level (UKVI IELTS score). Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. Students taking a course longer than 2 terms, will take additional modules designed to improve one or more of their English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects.

Master of Laws - Law

On the four-year MLaw version of this course (five years if taking a year abroad or placement year), students develop the same key skills for Law as on the LLB, as well as investigating more advanced topics by achieving a masters-level qualification. They cover all key areas of law, as well as a wide range of optional topics including:
  • Investigating miscarriages of justice
  • Music law and intellectual property law
  • How judges are involved in the law
  • Human rights
  • The use of evidence

As well as the following advanced masters level topics;

  • Maritime Law
  • International Criminal Law
  • Protection of Refugees
  • Business and human rights
  • Artificial intelligence and human rights

Students will develop a critical awareness of the nature of law within its social, political and economic contexts. Not only will they learn legal rules, but they will also consider the function of law in society, the philosophy of law, policy issues and law reform. Students will also have the option to specialise into one of three pathways; human rights law, international law or commercial law.

At Essex they specialise in commercial law, public law, and human rights law. They are ranked among the top 200 departments in the QS World University Rankings (2019) and they are top 20 in the UK for research excellence (REF 2014, mainstream universities, THE 2014).
