Academic Accelerator - Bachelor of Music - Music Education

4-Year Bachelor's Degree

Program Summary

Program Description

The Academic Accelerator Program (AAP) is a two-semester program designed specifically for students who are ready to succeed in immersive English-speaking classrooms, but who also want the benefit of English-language and student support to help them thrive. The program curriculum offers a balance of university-wide and AAP-exclusive courses, with English-language course supplements that equip students with the practical, subject-specific vocabulary and skills they need to excel in their coursework.

As an Academic Accelerator student at UDayton Global you'll receive:
  • The right amount of support when you need it.
  • A seat in credit-bearing courses, so you can earn a full freshman year’s worth of credits while taking courses tailored to your needs as an international student. This will help you achieve your academic and career goals.
  • English-language instruction designed around your social and academic needs.
  • Integrated and cohorted courses, so you’ll be in some classes with U.S. students and others with your designated UDayton Global cohort.

In order to graduate competitive and first-rate music educators, our program provides you with comprehensive instruction in musicianship and pedagogy. You will learn contemporary methodology from professors skilled in preparing you to meet the challenges of teaching in diverse environments.

As a music education major, you will have the opportunity to choose one of two specialty areas (instrumental or vocal) and receive extensive training for that concentration. Participating in field experiences in a variety of educational settings, beginning your first year, allows you to sharpen your teaching skills and become comfortable and effective in the classroom. On a weekly basis, you can also teach in a local elementary school, classroom music for preschoolers, choral music at a local high school and for the UD New Horizons Music Program for adults.

Practical, hands-on experience is an integral part of our philosophy in providing the best possible opportunities for developing teaching skills. For example, our Music Education Professional Development Workshop provides a weekly gathering of all music education majors. At 1 p.m. every Monday, you will find students engaged in activities ranging from singing in a choir, playing instrumental music, instructing classes and hosting guest speakers.

The Department of Music is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, and the music education degree is licensed by the state of Ohio.
