The Dental Surgery program offers an exciting combination of teaching, allowing students to gain knowledge in the scientific and pathological processes underlying oral and dental disease while developing the necessary clinical and practical skills to effectively treat patients. Students will receive instruction from a dedicated team of dental professionals and will work under the guidance of consultants and primary care supervisors. The School boasts internationally renowned senior staff members who have contributed to its exceptional performance in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.
Students will have the opportunity to study at the University Dental Hospital, located at The University Hospital of Wales, which is the largest teaching hospital in the country. Being situated within a functioning hospital provides students with immediate exposure to the general public, professionals, and researchers. With approximately 100,000 patient contacts per year, 75% of which involve direct clinical management by students, there are ample opportunities for practical experience.
Our School is equipped with state-of-the-art dental clinics that provide a professional and compassionate environment for chair-side teaching. Additionally, our clinical laboratories feature cutting-edge CAD-CAM technology and three-dimensional printing facilities for the creation of intra-oral prostheses. Students will also benefit from a recent £2.2M refurbishment of our pre-clinical (phantom head) teaching facilities.
Upon graduation, clinicians who register with the General Dental Council will have the ability to work in various sectors of the dental field, including general dental care, community dental care, dental public health, hospital dental care, and within the armed forces.
