Program Summary
Medical biotechnology involves using developments in molecular and cellular biology to improve healthcare, treat diseases, and advance medical science.
The Bachelor of Medical Biotechnology (Honours) covers fast-growing areas such as gene editing with CRISPR, stem cell treatments, microbiome studies, data science, and immunotherapy. With the help of modern tools like molecular modelling, next-generation sequencing, and state-of-the-art drug delivery methods, biotechnology is influencing many aspects of healthcare—including cancer treatment, vaccine development, diagnostics, disease therapies, and medical devices—as well as other industries like animal health and food technology. This degree equips you with the skills and knowledge needed to contribute to any of these sectors.
Throughout the course, you'll study subjects such as molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, genetics, statistics, immunology, microbiology, cell biology, and bioinformatics. You’ll gain hands-on experience with medical research techniques, and have the flexibility to explore other interests through elective subjects.
To enhance your learning, you’ll take part in lab-based classes at the university’s specialized science facilities on the Wollongong campus or engage in fieldwork experiences.
