Program Description
Biology-Chemistry is one of several interdisciplinary programs offered at UNB. This program gives students the opportunity to study biology and chemistry jointly to cover a broad base of topics in both disciplines, and can be tailored to individual student interests. Courses in biology, chemistry, math, and physics will give students a knowledge of organisms (from the cellular level up to ecosystem level interactions) and how they can be understood and manipulated through application of chemical tools, techniques, and analysis at the molecular level. A selection of chemistry courses covering its main sub-disciplines will support student understanding of the relevant biochemical, medicinal, and pharmaceutical aspects of the program. The Biology-Chemistry program is available as a four-year Bachelor of Science degree with majors or honours program options in one of two streams: The Pre-Health Profession (PHP) stream, or the Comprehensive Stream.
The Biology and Chemistry departments have outstanding reputations, both nationally and internationally. Students will be able to benefit from the stellar accomplishments in research and acclaimed graduate and nationally-accredited undergraduate programs. The impact of the Biology and Chemistry professors’ research has led to several researchers not only being awarded large research grants, but some also being nationally recognized as Canada Research Chairs.
Hands-on learning:
- Lab courses focus on not only biological and chemical theory, but also practical hands-on application of knowledge and experimental design.
- Biology-Chemistry offers a co-operative work experience program for qualifying motivated and skilled students to develop relationships with employers to experience hands-on learning in the real world.
Skills students will acquire:
- Hands-on, practical biological and chemical skills in lab and field settings
- Application of current biological and chemical concepts and theories
- Statistical analysis and presentation skills
- Critical thinking and writing skills
- Organization, prioritization, and time-management
- Working independently and in collaboration as part of a research team
