Program Description
Biology is the science of life, and the department wants to foster a fascination with the biological sciences, develop scientific literacy, and build a solid foundation for careers in biology and related professions.
Contemporary biology asks many questions due to the vast scope of disciplines related to biological sciences, ranging from the smallest molecules and cellular components, to individual organisms such as microbes, plants and animals, to the larger environment, ecosystems and the biosphere.
The Biology Department has an outstanding reputation, both nationally and internationally. Students will benefit from the stellar accomplishments in research and acclaimed graduate and undergraduate programs. The impact of the professor’s research has led to numerous significant research grants, and to some faculty members being nationally recognized as Canada Research Chairs.
Hands-on learning
- Lab Courses - focus on not only biological theory but also practical hands-on application of knowledge and experimental design.
- Marine Block - upper-year students can dedicate an entire fall semester to field courses that give students an opportunity to gain intensive skills in field sampling, data analysis, and presenting research findings.
- Co-operative Work Experience program - qualifying motivated and skilled students develop relationships with employers to experience hands-on learning in the real world.
- Senior Research Projects and Independent Studies - allow students to work on real-world biological research projects in areas of individual interest.
Skills students will acquire:
- Hands-on, practical biological skills in lab and field settings
- Application of current biological concepts and theories
- Effective experimental design in laboratory- and field-based research
- Statistical analysis and presentation skills
- Critical thinking and writing skills
- Organization, prioritization, and time-management
- Working independently and in collaboration as part of a research team
