Bachelor of Science - Mathematics-Physics

4-Year Bachelor's Degree

Program Summary

Program Description

The field of mathematics today offers virtually unlimited opportunities for application, together with the aesthetic appeal and intellectual challenge that have always been compelling to so many. It provides both the language in which the theories of many disciplines, such as physics and economics, are best expressed, and the techniques by which many problems of these disciplines are analyzed and solved. Mathematical training develops analytical skills that are of great value in understanding and resolving issues in many fields. This is reflected in the large number of careers for which mathematical training is considered to be a particularly desirable preparation.

Industries that employ many mathematicians include aerospace, oil exploration, electrical engineering, finance, manufacturing, communication, and computing. Actuaries are employed by insurance companies as well as state and federal governments. The federal government has laboratories where research and development are carried out.

The University of Connecticut Mathematics Department has over 40 full-time permanent faculty who hold Ph.D. degrees from many leading institutions. UConn's faculty research represents some of the principal areas of mathematics, including algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, geometry, logic, number theory, probability, topology, and actuarial science. All of these disciplines are also covered in courses in the undergraduate curriculum.

In this track, which is available only for a BS degree, a student can choose a physics emphasis (Track A, with an advisor in the physics department) or a math emphasis (Track B, with an advisor in the math department). Courses include differential equations, linear algebra, and complex analysis. Students following the math emphasis would choose further courses from areas such as differential geometry, abstract algebra, probability, and analysis
