The Deakin College Foundation Program is equivalent to upper secondary school (Year 12) and university foundation programs. It aims to prepare students for further study in a Deakin College Diploma or for entry into the first year of a selected Deakin University bachelor degree.
The course consists of either a standard or extended track program. The standard track program consists of eight academic units: five core units and three elective units. The extended track program has an additional four units.
Various support services focusing on language, literacy and numeracy assistance are also available to help students in their studies. Each unit includes four hours of classes per week. Assessment for all units is continuous and includes tests, assignments and case study analysis. Most units have a final two-hour examination. To graduate from the Deakin College Foundation Program, students must complete and pass all eight units in the standard program or 12 units in the extended program.
The Diploma of Health Sciences can gain students direct entry into second year of Deakin University bachelor degrees in Exercise and Sports Science, Health Sciences, Nutrition Science, Psychological Science, Public Health and Health Promotion, and Biomedical Science. This Diploma will give students a comprehensive understanding of the health of individuals, communities and populations, so that they are prepared to enter a wide variety of undergraduate courses.
In Deakin's Bachelor of Public Health and Health Promotion, students will learn how to tackle health issues and improve the wellbeing of individuals, communities and populations. Combined approaches involving community engagement, policy development, research, education and the media will give them the expertise needed to address the causes of poor health and improve wellbeing throughout society.
Students will gain extensive practical experience throughout this course, including 120 hours of work experience in a health-related agency in their final year. They will be able to start building professional networks while putting their knowledge and skills to use in a practical setting under the supervision of qualified practitioners. By combining a strong theoretical base with hands-on learning in the field, students will graduate confident and career ready.
