Integrated Masters - Master of Engineering (MEng) - Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Year (H303)

Integrated Masters

Program Summary

The stimulating Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Year MEng degree is designed to give students the expertise needed to tackle real-world problems. This course provides students with the skills to deliver results in an ever-changing industry and they will benefit from a research-led culture, which informs the way the programme is taught.

Students have the option to spend a year in industry at the end of the second or third year. The aim of the Industrial Year is not simply to provide paid work but to ensure that its nature and quality are commensurate with students' professional development. A key element is to ensure that students and companies are well matched, maximising both parties’ experience. The University of Birmingham has an Industrial Liaison Officer who works with their industrial partners as well as an extensive industrial contact through the University of Birmingham's research.

The University of Birmingham's expertise in applying engineering science will equip students with the ability to solve problems of industrial and societal significance. Students will work alongside Civil and Electrical Engineers, this interdisciplinary working reflects industry practices and right from the very start will begin building their teamworking and professional skills alongside their technical knowledge.

Students will be the subject expert on a major project during the Mechanical Engineering (Automotive) degree where they will apply their in-depth technical knowledge. This will provide students with vital employability skills that will give them a competitive edge in applications forms, interviews and assessment tests for graduate jobs.

This course has been designed to be relevant to the needs of modern industry and to produce graduates who have the personal and intellectual qualities to be successful in their chosen careers. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to play leading roles in a professional capacity in both industry and academia, and thus able to deal with issues at the forefront of the discipline.

The opportunity is also open to students to get involved in work on UBRacing – the University of Birmingham's Formula Student racing team, which competes throughout the world.
