Program Summary

Program Description

International First Year Diploma - Science (X1D:1) (0100205):
The University of Tasmania International First Year Diploma – Science program has been developed to meet the needs of students who are academically capable of undertaking undergraduate study at university but require extra Academic English language support in their first year. Students will also benefit from a targeted introduction to academic, cultural, social and practical aspects of study at the University of Tasmania which may differ from the diverse international backgrounds they come from.

The Course is designed to allow students to meet the prerequisite knowledge and skills required for direct entry into second year Science undergraduate degrees at the University of Tasmania. Students will study eight units at first year undergraduate level. In addition to three compulsory units (Academic English, Data Handling and Statistics and Understanding Science), students will choose five elective units (two units for a discipline major, two units for a discipline minor and one unit as a degree elective). Four units are studied each semester over two semesters giving a total of eight units.

Learning Outcomes:
  • To demonstrate a coherent understanding of a discipline’s first year undergraduate level through identifying, describing and explaining foundational theories, concepts, principles, models and processes.
  • To critically apply this understanding to routine and relevant problems and settings and to make subsequent interpretations and recommendations.
  • To demonstrate intellectual independence, impartiality and sound judgement within general academic and specific disciplinary ethical and legal frameworks.
  • To effectively communicate ideas and findings to specialist and non-specialist audiences in written and oral formats using appropriate conventions and logical development supported with evidence and research.
Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology - Business Analysis (P3T):
The BICT is a specialist degree with both a theoretical and practical focus. It develops technological understanding and skills that are in high demand world-wide, plus builds project management and other business soft-skills that make students an ICT professional.

Students will develop knowledge and capabilities in communication, design, development and management and learn what it takes to implement and integrate ICT within an organisation. Students will also complete a hands-on project that gives them real-world experience before they even start their career.

Students will graduate with the skills and knowledge to grow into leadership positions; the drive to act on entrepreneurial ambition; and the confidence to pursue research and graduate studies.

Students will graduate with the abilities and skills to:
  • Employ the interpersonal skills of teamwork, initiative and working independently in order to effectively communicate to a range of stakeholders in ICT professional practice.
  • Manage secure data, information and knowledge by selecting, adapting and applying ICT processes, techniques and tools.
  • Analyse and evaluate the efficacy of ICT services, systems, processes or products cognisant of economic, social, legal, and ethical factors and consequences for individuals, organisations, and society.
  • Incorporate best practice and ICT industry standards and adhere to codes of professional conduct and practice when applying knowledge of ICT principles, processes, methodologies, research skills, tools, and techniques.
