Stony Brook’s Physics Program is ranked among the top 25 by U.S. News & World Report, making it an ideal place to explore the physical nature of the world and universe. Our faculty lead cutting-edge research, both experimental and theoretical, and students have the opportunity to collaborate with them on projects beyond the classroom. Research spans a wide range of topics, from the smallest particles to the largest cosmic phenomena, including areas like the standard model, quark-gluon plasma, atomic and molecular structures, quantum information, supernovae, galaxy formation, and cosmology. Much of this research is done in partnership with Brookhaven National Laboratory, one of the leading research institutions in the U.S.
