Women's & Gender Studies

Women's and Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary field that explores the impact of gender on experiences, history, and culture. It challenges traditional perspectives by centering women's experiences and questioning long-standing assumptions about gender and power. This area of study calls for new ways of thinking and critiques theories that overlook gender differences. At Stony Brook, the program offers a comprehensive introduction to feminism, including its global theories and methods, and examines how gender relates to other forms of social privilege. With a focus on transferable skills like analysis, communication, and expression, this program prepares students for a variety of careers in law, medicine, social work, business, education, and more. Many graduates go on to pursue further study in women's studies or related disciplines.
