Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study. Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion).

If you have earned a degree in certain science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, you may be eligible for a 24-month extension of your post-completion OPT employment authorization.

Cooperative education (or co-operative education) and internships are methods of combining classroom-based education with practical work experience. A cooperative education experience ("co-op"), provides academic credit for structured job experience. Co-ops are full-time, paid or unpaid positions. Internships may be full-time or part-time, paid or unpaid positions.
Even if you do NOT meet our minimum English requirement (IELTS or TOEFL), you still can get conditionally accepted in the program of your choice with the condition of completing our English program prior to starting your chosen program.
FIRST YEAR STUDENTS
Undergraduates who enter as first-year students to Boston through fall admission and NUin will live in university housing during their first and second years, unless a global experience or co-op experience takes them outside of the city of Boston. The First Year Experience (FYE) program has been developed to help Northeastern University’s first year students transition into this new and exciting chapter of their lives – college life.

The university reserves the right to alter these designations at any time.  During certain terms, First Year students could be assigned to any university residence hall, even those without the First Year designation. Upon the return from their NUin semester, NUin Students are often placed in second year or upperclassmen accommodations based on availability for the Spring of their first year.

GRADUATE AND LAW STUDENTS
There will not be University Housing for new or returning Graduate Students or Law Students for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Students are encouraged to utilize the following Northeastern University resources in their search for off-campus housing in the Boston area:

1. Contact Off Campus Support and Engagement Services by calling 617-373-8480, emailing [email protected], or viewing their website for referrals to area realtors, and advice on tenant rights and what to expect in a lease.

2. Register to use Northeastern’s Off-Campus Housing Online database or use the Roommate Feature to search for roommates and sublets. The database is continuously updated with property listings by area realtors and landlords.
