Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study. Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion).

If you have earned a degree in certain science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, you may be eligible for a 24-month extension of your post-completion OPT employment authorization.

Cooperative education (or co-operative education) and internships are methods of combining classroom-based education with practical work experience. A cooperative education experience ("co-op"), provides academic credit for structured job experience. Co-ops are full-time, paid or unpaid positions. Internships may be full-time or part-time, paid or unpaid positions.

Even if you do NOT meet our minimum English requirement (IELTS or TOEFL), you still can get conditionally accepted in the program of your choice with the condition of completing our English program prior to starting your chosen program.

On-campus Housing
On-campus housing is guaranteed for first-year students.

Once students have been admitted to the UO, they can register for housing. Students will want to learn about the different academic residential communities on campus as well as the room types and the different residence halls on campus. This information will help students fill out their housing registration.

First-year students at the University of Oregon live in the residence halls. First-time, full-time freshmen from the US have higher GPAs, higher retention rates, higher graduation rates, and faster graduation times when they spend their first academic year living in University Housing at the University of Oregon.
