  • Athletics: The University of South Dakota athletic department has tremendous pride and a tradition of excellence that dates back to competition in the 1880s. South Dakota sponsors 18 varsity programs including football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field (indoor and outdoor), men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s golf, women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, women’s tennis, softball, and women’s triathlon. The Coyotes’ football team, which competes at the FCS level, is a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Other varsity sports compete in The Summit League.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study. Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion).

If you have earned a degree in certain science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, you may be eligible for a 24-month extension of your post-completion OPT employment authorization.

Cooperative education (or co-operative education) and internships are methods of combining classroom-based education with practical work experience. A cooperative education experience ("co-op"), provides academic credit for structured job experience. Co-ops are full-time, paid or unpaid positions. Internships may be full-time or part-time, paid or unpaid positions.

Students need to plan their accommodations well in advance of their arrival as all accommodation options fill up quickly, well before the start of the semester.

On-Campus Residence Accommodations

All undergraduate students must live on campus for two years after they have graduated from high school. Other students, including graduate students, are able to live on campus if they wish. USD offers traditional residences as well as apartment-style housing.

Off-Campus Accommodations

Students not required to live on campus can choose from a variety of off-campus housing options. Students are responsible for researching and selecting off-campus housing.
