Established as a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who lost their lives on active service during the First World War and subsequent conflicts, Memorial University of Newfoundland draws inspiration from these sacrifices of the past as they help to build a better future for the province, the country and the world.

Research

Over 40% of Memorial’s research is ocean-related (in just the Faculty of Science it’s 68%). If there’s research happening in the North Atlantic, there’s a high likelihood Memorial University is involved. In fact, Memorial is a partner with the Ocean Frontier Institute, a $220 million collaborative research initiative aimed at harnessing the vast potential of the world’s oceans. Memorial is also part of Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, a private sector-led partnership using innovation and commercialization to drive increased sustainable economic growth from our oceans.

Accommodation

Students need to plan their accommodations well in advance of their arrival as all accommodation options fill up quickly, well before the start of the semester.

On-Campus Residence Accommodations

On-Campus residence accommodations are provided per discretion by the school.

Off-Campus Accommodations

The local area has a variety of off-campus rental housing options including single homes, duplexes, apartments and rooms for rent. Students wishing to live off-campus need to research availability on their own and should arrive well before the start of term to do so.

Homestay

Homestay options may be available, and our partners do their best to match students and hosts according to their interests and preferences. Homestay hosts include single people, young couples with children and pets, and older couples. All homestay accommodations have been inspected, and all adults in the home have completed a required criminal reference check.

Admission Requirements & Deadline

One of the following:

  • General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) or
  • International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE);

and one of the following:

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) or
  • International Advanced Levels (IAL).

All credential documents must be awarded by one of the following UK awarding bodies: Cambridge, EdExcel, Pearson, AQA, or OCR.

Grade requirement
  • Completion of the GCE including a minimum grade of C/4 in the required subject areas at the Ordinary (“O” or IGCSE) Level and at least three Advanced Subsidiary (“AS”) Level or two Advanced (“A”) Level subjects with a minimum grade of C. Exceptional candidates may be admitted based upon GCSE/IGCSE examination results.

If you have not yet completed A/AS Levels

When you apply (early decision)
  • If A/AS level results are not yet available, a provisional decision may be possible with a certified copy of the final GCSE/IGCSE certificate and predicted grades for the A/AS levels or the Provisional Results Slip of the A/AS levels.
  • Official English proficiency test result (if required) sent directly from the testing authority. See general admission criteria above.
  • Supplementary information required for competitive-entry programs may be required with your application.
    • If you are applying for admission to nursing or fine arts, you should e-mail an unofficial copy of your transcript, showing mid-year grade/progress report (issued by your school in January/February) no later than March 1.
When you complete your A/AS levels (final decision)
  • Certified copies of all GCE/IAL Final Certificates or Statement of Results Certificates sent by post or courier to the Office of the Registrar. Certifying Statement of Results sent directly from the awarding body to Memorial will also be accepted.

If you have completed A/AS Levels

English Language Proficiency Requirements

(Through to the Fall 2021 semester)

Requirement: A minimum score of 115.
Submission: Upon receipt of your certified test results, you should send the results from your Duolingo account to Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Requirement: A minimum overall band score of 6.5, with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. General training results are not acceptable.
Submission: Test Report Form can be e-mailed to [email protected]

Requirement: A minimum score of 79 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing, and not less than 17 in listening and speaking.
Submission: Document must be sent directly from the official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar by post or courier.
